Charles Martell & Son
Charles Martell & Son - Guardians of Gloucestershire’s Cheesemaking Heritage.
Nestled at Hunts Court Farm in Gloucestershire, Charles Martell & Son has been a pioneer of traditional British cheesemaking since 1972. Best known for creating the legendary Stinking Bishop, this renowned creamery has played a vital role in preserving heritage cheeses and rare livestock breeds, particularly the critically endangered Old Gloucester cows.
The farm’s dedication to tradition saw them revive and perfect the art of making Single Gloucester cheese, securing Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status in 1997. Alongside their exceptional cheeses, Charles Martell & Son is also committed to preserving historic perry pear varieties, further enriching Gloucestershire’s rural heritage.
Beyond cheese, the farm embraces centuries-old practices, including the distillation of artisan spirits using a restored 17th-century still-house. This fusion of tradition, craftsmanship, and innovation makes Charles Martell & Son a true icon of British artisanal food production.
Experience the unmistakable flavours of Gloucestershire’s rich dairy heritage with Charles Martell & Son—where history and craftsmanship thrive in every bite.
